Why the Robin Has a Red Chest
Long ago, a mouse and a robin were the best of friends. One cold morning the mouse said, "Winter is coming. We should find a warm, safe place to shelter."
"That sounds wise," replied the robin. "But first, let's look inside that big prickly hedge over there."
The mouse looked at the hedge nervously. "It looks very sharp," she said. "I am not sure it is safe."
But the robin puffed out his chest and boasted, "I am not afraid of a few thorns! Watch me."
He flew straight into the middle of the hedge without looking where he was going. Sharp thorns scratched across his soft white feathers as he pushed through the branches.
"Ouch!" cried the robin, hopping back out. His white chest was covered in tiny red scratches.
The mouse gasped. "Are you hurt?"
"Only a little," said the robin, trying to sound brave, even though his chest stung terribly.
From that day on, the robin's chest stayed a warm, rosy red, and it has been that colour ever since — a reminder of the day he was too proud to look before he leapt.
